Benefits of Rope Jumping?

You could walk into any boxing gym in the country and hear a few familiar sounds. Young fighters will thump away at the heavy bags. Others will create rhythmic sounds on the speed bag. A bell will ring every few minutes, indicating the beginning and end of a new round. Amidst these sounds, you can also expect to hear a fast skipping noise. The skipping noise will come from the spinning motion of several jump ropes. Jumping rope (also referred to as rope skipping) is a staple in a boxer’s conditioning program. If you are involved in the sport, you can expect to spend some time with the rope.

Jump rope training will enhance:

  • Coordination
  • Agility
  • Quickness
  • Footwork
  • Endurance

In addition to the obvious physical benefits, jumping rope is fun. There are always new footwork patterns that you can develop and practice.

Unfortunately, despite the obvious benefits, most athletes outside of the boxing gym are unfamiliar with jump rope training. Many strength and conditioning coaches have replaced the jump rope with more elaborate and expensive training tools. We have seen entire seminars dedicated to footwork and agility. Coaches charge hundreds of dollars to teach many techniques which could instead be developed with a $10 rope.

The jump rope is a tried and true method for improving conditioning and coordination. If you have never jumped rope before, you can expect a challenge. The rope can be very frustrating to a beginner. You will not become proficient with the rope overnight. It takes time and practice. It has been said before that practice is the mother of all skills. These words definitely apply to jump rope training.

Many athletes attempt the rope, get frustrated, and quickly find alternative conditioning tools. Do not allow your frustration to interfere with your development as an athlete.

According to research jump rope for a minimum of five minutes a day can improve physical fitness and when you build to ten minutes of nonstop jumping at 120 RPMs it can provide the same benefits as the following:

  • 30 minutes of jogging
  • 2 sets of tennis singles
  • 30 minutes of racquet and handball playing
  • 720 yards of swimming
  • 18 holes of golf

In addition, jumping helps to develop the left and right hemispheres of the brain, to further improve spacial awareness and reading skills, and increases memory and mental alertness. Jumping on balls of the feet requires the body and mind to make neural muscular adjustments to imbalances created from continuous jumping. As a result jumping improves dynamic balance and coordination, reflexes, bone density and muscular endurance.

Best jump rope for fitness?

We find that athletes and members of fitness and boxing clubs like our ultra speed ropes for speed and multiple unders. The Cable Freestyle jump rope is a favorite of fitness enthusiasts. The ultra speed ropes are perfect for double unders and speed. The Cable Freestyle and Boxing Rope do well for speed, but you cab do crossing moves with these ropes.
We do not sell weighted HEAVY ROPES, nor do we encourage their use due to possible injury to the user. Instead we encourage jumping rope supplemented by a good weight training program for those who wish to use weights.

How can I start a jump rope club or team?

  1. If you have instructors who are familiar with teaching sports or movement, we have a Basic Instructional Guide available from the USA JUMP ROPE office for $15. This guide gives directions on how to set up a program and gives details on skills for single rope, long rope and Double Dutch instruction for Beginners. Lesson plans are also included. If you plan to start a Jump Rope team you would want to order the New Team Starter Guide for $10. This has helpful guidelines on how to set up the administration of a team. There are also additional manuals and videos that may be of help available from USAJR.
  2. USA JUMP ROPE also has an Instructor Certification Program. This is based on the Basic Guide and our clinician will teach potential instructors how to teach basic skills and prepare their students for jump rope instruction and get them ready for USAJR competitions. Upon successful completion of this six hour class, each instructor will receive a certificate of proficiency and a USAJR t-shirt. For details about this program please see below. To make this program cost effective you may wish to invite youth instructors from other programs or local P.E. teachers to participate.
  3. We can attempt to find a coach and team who could come to your location to work with your participants. If there are no instructional teams close to you, it would therefore mean bringing in a team at your expense from another state. There may be a time delay on this option because our teams are very much in demand.

Please feel free to call USA Jump Rope at 800-225-8820 or e-mail them at mfletcher@usajumprope.org if you have further questions. ***PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS FOR STARTING A TEAM ONLY. DO NOT SEND CUSTOMER SERVICE QUESTIONS TO THIS ADDRESS!
